Overclocking: Why you should and should not do it

I just tried it out starting at 85hz and it seemed it work alright, but there were a few animation glitches in windows. I'm just wondering if you can ruin your monitor by overclocking it this way and whether it's safe to do.

Most monitors can overclock slightly, but due to having scalers they generally won't get above 80Hz; it is fairly common to achieve 96Hz on the QNIX displays with thanks to their exclusion of a scaler. You are taking risks with any sort of overclocking -- those risks could involve killing the hardware involved.
First of all, the basics of monitor overclocking are not quite like GPU or CPU overclocking, although they do share some similarities. One similarity is that an unstable overclock will produce artifacts or no picture at all. Another similarity is that system components will impact overclocking; for example, different GPUs and DVI-D cables have been reported by some users to affect the maximum overclock. Those similarities stated, the processes do differ in some key ways.
A monitor can appear to be stable when overclocked, but in hidden reality is simply skipping frames. Before overclocking a display, it should be noted that this darkens the screen, can cause artifacts, lowers gamma, and oftentimes voids warranty. The result is a higher refresh rate frequencywhich can be worth the downsides for some users. Note: Be sure to completely read instructions, requirements, and warnings. Simply run the patcher and then download and use the Custom Resolution Utility made by ToastyX to create multiple profiles at different Hz settings. When booted back into windows, go to the display section in Catalyst Control Center or nVidia Control Panel for nVidia userschoose the screen being overclocked, and change the refresh rate. If any artifacts appear on screen or the monitor goes blank, the overclock is too high and should be reduced.
Repeat this process until no artifacts are found. Some screens will overclock significantly higher than others. If not, decrease the overclock and try again. Since color is changed when overclocking, many choose to download programs such as Color Sustainer to help mitigate color change, although in my experience the color change is fairly insignificant for regular browsing and gaming use.

Many motherboards and Intel CPUs ship with locked multipliers, preventing you from tinkering with their values and overclocking your CPU. How to overclock your monitor to a higher refresh rate

It might seem daunting at first, but advancements in technology have allowed for higher-level and more user-friendly overclocking experiences, making for a beginner-friendly process. Learning how to overclock your CPU and GPU, and how to do it safely, is a great way to gain extra performance from your components completely for free. Just follow the simple steps below to get up and running. No soldering required. Or maths. It would be very easy to look at all that and conclude overclocking is something best left to the experts.

Keep pushing the memory slider up in small increments until you start to see those telltale signs of failing memory… or until the card or system crashes. Once you get to that stage, dial back the clockspeed by either one or two steps, apply the new memory clock, and leave Heaven running for a longer period to make sure it remains stable at the new speed.
If you see more memory artifacts, drop down another MHz increment, and test again. Before you start upping the GPU clockspeed, push the power limit slider up to max — allowing the graphics card to deliver more power to the silicon if it can — and also push up the temperature limit a little higher to account for the increased heat generation. Using the same process we used when overclocking the video memory, push the GPU clockspeed up by MHz increments, checking the game window for artefacts as you apply each step change.
Processor artefacts manifest themselves in different ways to memory issues. Keep an eye out for pixel-sized dots of different colours appearing around the screen, random shards of colour, or bright and coloured full-screen flashes.
Now you want to see how everything looks with both the GPU and memory clocks set to the peak levels you discovered individually. If you get a system crash, on the other hand, simply reboot and set both memory and processors speeds back one step, and test again. Close down Heaven in windowed form and restart it fullscreen at your native resolution and leave it looping for a good ten minutes to make sure it remains fully stable at your new clocks.
When you are positive it is stable, hit F9 to benchmark, and see what performance increase your efforts have afforded you. Not all graphics cards are created equal and neither are the chips inside them. You cannot be guaranteed of a particular overclock or indeed any overclock at all as every GPU will have a different limit because of vagaries in the manufacturing process. You might get lucky and find your GPU will boost like a beast.
Similarly, you might not be able to get much extra performance at all. But as certain accidental horse-meat suppliers are wont to say: every little helps. There are other things you can do to help, however. If your card is a reference version, using either a standard Nvidia or AMD cooler design, you can buy relatively cheap third-party coolers to replace them and potentially deliver higher overclocking performance. The overclocking process is similar to the one I detailed earlier — patiently pushing up clockspeeds while checking Heaven in a separate window — but there are a few, slightly different steps.

Testing for full stability requires more than a glance at the desktop however. Run a few familiar games and spend some time moving windows or playing video while checking for blinking horizontal lines, skipped frames or other erratic behavior.
If you find any, lower the refresh rate slightly and try again. Tucked away on the interface panel amidst the rest of the graphics card tools is a basic slider-style Pixel Clock utility that provides the easiest way to dabble with refresh rates. Just slide and click. Contrary to what you might have heard, cables do make a difference, especially when it comes to high refresh rates and resolutions. Keep cable length short; longer cables can result in lower overclocks due to signal degradation.
Try different cables or connectors on both the monitor and GPU sides and avoid using adapters, unless they are specially made for the purpose. Some versions of the patch break HDCP support and other features, so read the known issues for each carefully. Which brings us to a final note of caution that holds true for any overclock—this probably voids warranties and whatnot so be prepared to shoulder the consequences if anything goes wrong. Keeping your PC cool will help protect it from damage caused by overclocking. So make sure your PC is well-ventilated before increasing its speed. I don't recommend overclocking laptops, which tend to be less ventilated than desktops. Even if overclocking doesn't do any harm, it could still void your warranty.
So if you're thinking of overclocking a PC new enough to still have a warranty, check with the manufacturer first. Finally, overclocking may not improve overall performance all that much. The processor is only one of several components that effect overall performance, and it's likely not the one that's slowing you down. Hard drives, RAM, and graphics may be more serious bottlenecks.
